| All change at Waterstone's. |
| This move is likely to be welcomed by self-publishing authors – who often have strong relationships with their local Waterstone's, but who can struggle to get their books noticed. Waterstone's have appointed Dominic Myers as the new Managing Director, following the departure of Gerry Johnson from the role. Myers has indicated he will review all aspects of the Waterstone's brand, and look at giving increased responsibility to local managers. |

| Borders in administration |
| After much speculation in the last few months, Borders finally called in the administrators last week. The administrators have already laid off many head office staff, and branches are expected to close in the run up to Christmas. For self-publishing authors it could be a potential disaster as Borders were always keen to support new authors with signings and in stocking their books. As the chain also bought direct from self-publishing authors, many are now likely to be out of pocket with books in store but no likelihood of payment being received. There is an outside chance that some branches may be bought by other retailers like Waterstones, but it is thought that most will close. |

| Book covers - what do they say about your book? |
| The publisher chose a commercial cover design for a teen read - inadvertently causing a racial debate. for more info, click here.
You can hear the author’s opinion about this as she has posted her comments about the cover on her blog for more info, click here
The cover design process in a mainstream publishing house is very different than that undertaken by self publishers - one of the great joys for many self publishing authors is that they get to design their cover - but do self publishers get it wrong too?

| Self published book wins prize. |
| Author, Richard Parkyn collected his award at during the award ceremony held at Waterstone’s in Truro. He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the Children’s section prize of the Holyer An Gof awards. I had an immense feeling of satisfaction when the book had been printed, but then to actually have won an award makes the six years it took to get from idea to finished copy all the more worthwhile.”

| Self-Publishing BookExpo announced... |
For authors you can see the attraction of an Expo as it's somewhere to sell your book and raise awareness. But that would necessarily imply that there will be involvement from retailers, wholesalers and the media, and in the past that's where such events have fallen down.
There's little point in an event that ends up just selling services and self-publishing to authors, that just perpetuates the image of self-publishing as DIY. What is needed is proper involvement from the retail trade at such an event, so that authors can really get their work noticed.
The Expo's web site is also shockingly poor, the sort of DIY web design that went out years ago. Again, this does nothing to improve the image of self-publishing, but perpetuates the 'amateur' image that so many are trying to get away from.
It's early days and the Expo has yet to announce any exhibitors or participants, so we hope they take note of the criticisms that have been appearing and up their game! |
