Nick Wastnage's first novel would, I believe, be better placed in the thriller genre. At just 242 pages, it is spot on for that summer read. It fairly rolls along at an action-packed pace.
I make this clichéd comment quite deliberately, as, in my opinion, there are far too many clichés in this book. There are far too many characters which make for a somewhat confusing and disjointed read, and readers may be put off by some characters who flit in and out several times. Furthermore, the list of principal characters and secondary characters is out of place. It is more akin to a play and takes away some of the enjoyment of finding out about some of the stronger characters.
Flitting from continent to continent this book has its good points in a thriller context – those ubiquitous sun-drenched, sandy beaches, world famous landmarks, etc. But for me, all this location-hopping was a touch too manic. You could argue that Wastnage is simply trying too hard. The crimes are of such a high-octane level as to be unbelievable. Even James Bond slows down now and again! Having said that, it certainly offers romance, murder and revenge in spades. The author’s style is pacy and upbeat and his book is a page-turner for those who like plenty of action.
