This picture book is targeted at two to seven year olds and focuses on Pog, a bad tempered Pixie. The blurb states the book’s aims clearly – Pog will learn that being angry all the time isn’t a good thing, and the book will be humorous and have a ‘strong moral message’. This should help encourage parents to give the book a go.

But as to whether it meets its aims, I am not convinced. While a moral is present, Pog certainly doesn’t learn that being angry all the time is a negative thing. Instead, we find him sleeping while other characters deliver this message to the reader. As Pog is our main character, his arc seems incomplete.

The story is told through rhyme, and although it has its highlights, the rhythm and style aren’t always consistent, and it is sometimes hard to read, especially out loud. Some words are perhaps used for the convenience of rhyme, and occasionally wording may not be appropriate for the target audience: ‘embed’, ‘muster’. The full-page illustrations, though, are consistent, colourful and appropriate, even if a little rough around the edges. Pog and his world are brought to life effectively in this respect.

Overall, I feel a good character has been set up, but the book doesn’t fully fulfil its aims. I also fear that this short book will suffer from having such a high price – at £6.99, it is far too expensive for what it offers.
