I enjoyed this book very much because it brought back memories of my own childhood; when I was evacuated to Wales during the Second World War. I even remember playing the ball game the author refers to, where you had to throw the ball under your leg and turn full circle before you caught it.
The way the author has reconstructed the past made me really feel as if I was reliving my own youth. I could relate to many of the characters and situations. Some of the humorous accounts not only brought memories back to my mind, but tears of amusement to my eyes – like the occasion when one of the characters spent hours curling her hair in rags for a special occasion – only for it to rain on her parade and ruin her entire hairdo!
I don’t think this is a book that would appeal to younger readers, but for those of us who can relate to the anecdotes in the book, it is a joy to read.
