Christology With Lonergan and Balthasar is a highly informative, philosophical, well-written and well-researched book. A book that is loyal to its blurb. It is a collection of essays that deal with various issues and concerns within Christology. The content is academic, but the fluid writing style makes the piece friendly. Sometimes, however, words are emboldened (and referred to in the glossary) which give it a textbook feel, which could be intimidating for some readers but helpful sign posts for others.
Topics range from historical and biblical debates regarding Jesus and Judaism to political and cultural issues such as feminism and liberation. The chapter on feminism is particularly worth reading. It draws on contemporary, biblical and historical social and cultural concerns that could lead to an interesting philosophical deliberation. The book's quality is excellent: a glossy hardback. Some may feel that the front cover is somewhat dull; however it is certainly a professional look for the book’s genre. It could be said that the cover price is slightly too much at £11.99 for a book that is 128 pages (including index), although many readers will appreciate that the quality of the literature makes it worth its price.
A book that is written with passion for Christology. The target audience is for those either interested in Christianity, Christians or academics. Those who do not sympathise with the book’s values may regard the subjects and ideas differently to those who do, yet they will most likely find it an impressive read.
