Film star and sausage – yes it really says that – is a children’s adventure story which is a nicely presented, easy to read modern-day ‘Famous Five’-type tale. The Famous Five, or Buccaneers, are in fact four youngsters, Elké, Rebecca, Biffer and Skin, who fall into a sticky situation having to fight the bad guy and master criminal ‘Fat Cat’. This is the first of their adventures, The Buccaneers Fight Fat Cat, in which the team meet and of course succeed in their mission. The lead-up to the action is rather slow and quite frankly far too long. The story did hold my attention, but could have become far more gripping with a really good edit. As a former Famous Five fan with three boys, I like the reality of the places and the characters. The Buccaneers could be real kids, and their mission is rooted in modern-day reality. It’s a well written and well presented book, although the drawings let it down rather, as does the front cover, but the book overall has potential. But for the target age group it really should be shorter and more tightly written. Why make it longer and lose the impact? The writing at times was more simplified than at others, but overall a jolly good read, and certainly not overpriced.
