“Perfect for the train or the toilet or the tired” says the blurb on the back of this book of business advice. This is a compilation of monthly columns that the author wrote for a newspaper.
Each is a short, good, idea – an essay with a message. Each piece is well laid out and easy to read. You can read them in any order. Some of them are clichés: “If you don’t ask, you don’t get”. Some are clever: “Make Yourself Scarce”. Some are common sense: “Don’t try to do it all”. The cheerful, positive, intelligence of the author comes through in every one.
This is a book I’d give as a present to a business colleague, most likely a female one. The examples she gives are personal, and all from the woman’s point of view. This does not detract from the book’s value, but alpha-males might dismiss it before they’d learned from it.
It is an honest book: it doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s not a profound philosophical work, although the author has clearly thought deeply. There’s also a humility to the writing, which I found appealing. Ms Hull Rodgers is not prescriptive. She isn’t trying to instruct us in what to do, she’s simply sharing her experience in a light-hearted, friendly way. Perfect for an airport bookshop, I’d say, although £10 is a bit high for a small paperback.
