Readers are strongly advised to read the introduction to this book, for the reason that it will address issues and questions that might enter their minds on reading the beguiling, yet risky, title. Some people might be offended by a book that seems to promote a generalisation of a race and nation, however there doesn't seem to be any overt animosity here, as the narrative is always self-conscious and is written in a light-hearted tone.

This book offers 50 reasons to hate the French, and it does provide fifty, but the reasons put forward may not be persuasive enough. It certainly fulfils its claim to offer researched points; however, some of the reasons appear somewhat contrived, presumably to make up the number of reasons to fifty. For instance, many people might see the beret as a reason to love the French, not hate them!

This is a very subjective book, and its success will depend on who is reading it. Even though the text is written lucidly, it is often interrupted with text boxes containing facts and figures, scattered almost randomly around the page – some of which can be distracting. Some might feel that the extra narrative details are occasionally irrelevant, whilst others may regard them as enriching the book.

On balance, though, this book is not about loving or hating the French – it's a book that provides a lot of informative and often comical insights into contemporary and historical France. The book is more likely to endear France to readers, and make them more aware of what makes the French tick, rather than lead to any ill-opinion.
