This is a gripping story for younger people aged 9–11, especially those who are interested in football. There is also plenty of interesting action for others, for it contains sub-plots about school life, bullying, being the children of famous parents, making films and the anguish felt by the children when the marriage of their parents seems to be breaking up.

The plot does roll along at a pace, and we are soon absorbed in the story, whether or not we like football. As well as a cracking plot, the author has managed to maintain a good balance in the book between dialogue and description. We stay close to Archie, the main character, son of famous football star Gavin Carr, a believable character with whom we soon empathise. Where the book does fall down is in some of the language used. At times the register is a little high for a 9–11 year-old, and sometimes it is also slightly old-fashioned.

On the whole, a good read. The cover might put off people who are not interested in football, though the back cover gives enough information to tempt others. The price is about right for the size of the book.
